The Nicolas family has been producing wine in Saumur-Champigny for six generations. Now led by sixth generation winemaker Vincent Nicolas, the domaine consists of 15 hectares of vineyards around Turquant, a winemaking village also known for its troglodytes. The commune of Turquant is home to 600 inhabitants and a mere 10 vignerons. The vineyard, located on the AOP Saumur-Champigny area, benefit from an ideal landscape protected by the national forest of Fontevraud-l’Abbaye and the Loire River, it also enjoys exceptional sunshine and mild weather. The Romans named this land “champigny” or “field of fire” because of this amazing microclimate. Today this vineyard has been chosen to represent the Loire valley under the World Heritage listing by UNESCO. The soil is composed of a warm mix of clay and limestone over tufa rock that absorbs winter’s rain, and slowly returns it during summer.
